How the stone came to be
Its name is literally chance. Aventurine comes from the Italian a ventura — by accident — after Venetian glassmakers of the 1700s knocked copper filings into molten glass and produced a glittering stone they could not repeat on purpose. The natural mineral was named after the accident. A stone named for the opening you did not manufacture is the right stone for the Law of Prospects.
The sparkle has a name too: aventurescence. It comes from thousands of tiny platy inclusions of mica or fuchsite lying inside the quartz, each one catching light at its own angle. The glitter is not on the surface — it is held inside the body of the stone, and it only appears when the stone is turned toward the light. Outlook, in mineral form: the view exists, but you have to face it.
It is quartz, so it is hard and it takes daily wear, and it has been used for centuries as a comforting stone rather than a dazzling one — tumbled smooth, kept in a pocket, warmed in a hand. It does not perform. It sits with you while you look out.
