How the stone came to be
Rhodochrosite takes its name from the Greek rhodon and chros — rose colour. Its pink comes from manganese, and its bands come from time: water carrying dissolved mineral drips through a cavity again and again, each pass laying down one more ribbon. The stone is literally made of repeated giving. Nothing about it happened at once.
The famous banded rosettes were pulled from the silver mines of Capillitas in Argentina, where miners called it Inca Rose and told of it as blood turned to stone by love. Colorado gave the world the other face of it — the Alma King, a transparent raspberry crystal from the Sweet Home Mine, and the state made rhodochrosite its own.
It is a soft stone, 3.5 to 4, softer than a coin. That is not a flaw for this day; it is the lesson. Compassion is soft on purpose. What is soft can be shaped, can absorb, can ease — and it must be handled with care by anyone who claims to love it.
