The stone read as the word

Red jasper is the least glamorous quartz and the most used: dense, tough, uniform, and it takes an edge and a polish without complaint. Craftsmen chose it for objects that had to survive being used.

Construction is heaping together — struere. This is the stone of what actually exists at the end of the day that did not exist at the beginning of it.

Carried for the day something must be finished, not discussed.
Held for work meant to be used, not admired.
