Virtuousness & the Office

A woman begins at the C word. WHO she is comes first — the attribute, the virtue, the nature. She does not have to hold an office to be Created, Chosen, Courageous or Constant; she is those things before anyone appoints her to anything, and that is why her stone is worn rather than wielded.

Virtuousness is the whole of womanhood in one word. Not niceness, not compliance — virtue is strength with a direction. A virtuous woman is a woman whose power has a shape, and the ninety gems are that shape read back to her, one attribute at a time.

So her page is a jewel. She reads the stone, hears the word, says the affirmation, and carries it. The gem tells her what she already is, and the day's law tells her what to do with it.

A man begins at the O word. WHAT he is comes first — the office he holds, the ground under it, the resources inside it. He asks what a thing is for and what it can bear before he asks what it means. Handed a stone, he wants to know its hardness, its use, and what it will survive.

So his page is a forge, not a jewel box. Every gem now has a second reading: what a Viking would actually have done with the stone, what it signifies for righteousness — the straight edge a man measures his own work against when nobody is watching — and why he chases the virtue in the first place.

Righteousness is straightness. An office is a line drawn around a man's strength so that it lands on the people he loves instead of on them. The stone is what keeps the line where it was drawn.
