How the stone came to be
Opal is not a crystal at all. It is silica spheres stacked in a grid with water still held between them, and its fire is not pigment — it is diffraction. Light enters, strikes the spheres, and comes back apart as color. Change the angle and the color changes with it.
This is why no two opals are alike and why an opal must be presented. Face down in a tray it is a dull pebble; turned to the light it is a flare of turquoise, rose and gold. The stone did not gain anything in the turning. It was already that.
Romans called it opalus, the stone of many colors, and considered it the most powerful gem because it contained the color of every other. Australia has supplied most of the world's precious opal since the 1890s, formed where ancient inland seas left silica in the cracks of drying rock.
