Day 30 · Law of Increase

The Law of the

Perpetuality

The last law is the turn — thirty days finish a layer, then it begins again, one sphere higher

Day Thirty is the Law of Perpetuality, and it is not an ending — it is the turn. Thirty days do not finish a woman; they finish a layer. Then the whole thing begins again over the top of what you built: concentric spheres, a whole new layer and a whole new house every time round, each one perfecting the last. She begins continuous — without a gap, one unbroken thing — and how she moves is to evolve, which means to unroll: not to become something else, but to open out what was already folded inside her. What she works with is the onset, the setting-on, the beginning that arrives whether or not she called for it. Onsets are what a novice deals with constantly: something starts, and she must handle it. She becomes current, and current is a flowing word and a now word at once: in the stream, and up to date within it. This is how she embarks, and embark is the plain sense of it — she gets on the ship. Again. Every layer needs a fresh boarding, and the ladder has another rung on it every time she looks. What she becomes is the outsetter: the one who sets out, guided, her connection to God ever flowing, so the current she stays in is not her own. In the Sovereign she becomes continual — and continual is not continuous. Continuous means unbroken, with no gap at all; continual means recurring, again and again, with intervals between. A river is continuous; a season is continual. She learns to be both: unbroken in what she is, recurring in what she does, so a pause is a rhythm and not a failure. Her movement is egress — to go out, the lawful door on the far side, not an escape. She egresses one finished layer and stands outside it, which is the only way to lay another over the top. And what she increases are the outsets, plural: an onset is what happens to you, an outset is what you set out on. She stops collecting beginnings that arrived and begins collecting departures she chose. So continuous becomes current becomes continual. She evolves, she embarks, she egresses. Onset becomes outsetter becomes outsets — and on Day Thirty the planner closes, and Day One opens again, one layer higher.

"I am continuous becoming current becoming continual. I evolve, I embark, and I egress — and every layer I lay goes over the top of the last."
