How the stone came to be
A pearl begins as an intrusion. Something gets inside the shell that the animal cannot expel, so it does the only other thing it can: it covers it. Layer over layer of nacre, thin as a soap film, laid down concentrically around that one centre — and it never stops while the animal lives. The pearl you hold is not a finished object. It is a record of a creature that kept going round again.
This is the law of perpetuality in a jewel. Nothing is discarded and nothing is restarted. Each new coat goes over the top of the last, in the same shape, at a larger radius — a whole new sphere every season, the old sphere still inside it, perfected by being covered. Thirty days, then thirty days again, one layer higher.
The iridescence is called the orient, and it is not pigment. It is light striking hundreds of translucent layers at slightly different depths and coming back interfered with. The glow is literally the layering. You cannot fake it with colour, and you cannot get it in one pass.
Pearls were the most valuable gems on earth for most of recorded history — traded before cut diamonds existed, worn by queens as the sign of a sovereign line, and the one jewel Scripture uses for the thing a merchant sells everything else to obtain. Soft, cool, and made rather than mined.
