The stone read as the word
Abalone grows its shell in returning surges, each one adding a wider arc of nacre than the one before. The pattern is not a single line but a rhythm of returns — and the architecture is so strong that engineers copy it.
Continual is different from continuous: continuous is unbroken, continual is again and again. Day Thirty is both, and this shell is the second one — sphere upon sphere, a new house every time round.
What it is carried for
- Carried at the turn, when the layer closes and the next begins.
- Held for a life built in returns rather than in one straight line.
