The stone read as the word

Chrysocolla is copper wearing a different coat. It only forms in the oxidised zone of copper deposits, so prospectors read it as a sign: where this blue-green shows, current-carrying metal runs underneath. The stone is the visible end of a conductive line.

It also hardens by association. Soft on its own, chrysocolla infused with chalcedony becomes gem silica — one of the most valuable blue gems in the world. Conduction works both ways: what it carries, it is also strengthened by.
