How the stone came to be
Chrysoprase takes its green not from chromium, like emerald, but from nickel dissolved through the silica as it formed — which is why the color is soft and living rather than electric. The name comes from the Greek chrysos, gold, and prason, leek: golden green.
It was one of the most prized stones of the ancient world. Alexander the Great is said to have worn it into battle; Frederick the Great set it through the rooms of Sanssouci; it appears in the reliquaries of Prague. For centuries it was valued above many transparent gems because it looked like new growth held in stone.
The finest is Australian, mined in Queensland, where it forms in seams through weathered nickel deposits — a beautiful thing produced by ground that had been broken open.
It is the stone of the Law of Path because the path is not decoration either. It is the green line through hard rock, and it only shows where the ground has been opened.
