How the stone came to be
Sodalite crystallizes in magmas starved of silica and rich in sodium — it forms where the ordinary recipe was not available, which is exactly how pursuit works. It was named in 1811 for the sodium inside it, after being found in Greenland, and the great masses of it in Bancroft, Ontario were quarried for the world after Princess Patricia chose it for Marlborough House.
Its blue is rarely flat. White calcite runs through it in threads and lattices, so every piece looks like a field with paths cut across it — a map of somebody's searching. Some sodalite is tenebrescent: expose it to sunlight and it darkens, put it in the dark and the color returns. The stone literally responds to being examined.
It is often mistaken for lapis lazuli, and it is lapis's quieter relative — in fact lapis contains sodalite. The difference is telling: lapis dazzles, sodalite studies.
