How the stone came to be
Moss agate is not moss at all. The green ferns and thickets inside it are dendrites — mineral inclusions of chlorite, hornblende or manganese and iron oxide that crystallised through the chalcedony as it formed, branching the way a plant branches because the physics of growth is the same in mineral and in leaf. Nothing living was ever trapped in it. It simply grew, in stone, in the shape of a garden.
For that reason it has been called the gardener’s stone for as long as anyone has recorded stone lore. Farmers carried it into the field and buried it in the ground for a good yield; it was set into tools and planting bags, and given for the health of crops, herds and trees. It is the working stone of cultivation — excavated ground, enriched soil, and the crop that follows.
Warriors in some traditions wore it too, as a stone of victory carried into the open, and it has long been a stone of new beginnings: what has been dug up, transplanted, and made to blossom in different ground. That is exactly the passage of this day — cultivated, then cultured, then courtly.
