Rutilated Quartz

How the stone came to be
Rutilated quartz is a stone with its own record inside it. The rutile needles grew first — titanium dioxide, formed at higher heat, standing in straight lines. Then the silica arrived, cooled, and crystallised around them without bending a single needle. The quartz did not hide what was there; it made it visible, and then held it still. That is a purview: what falls inside your view becomes part of the record.
Because quartz is transparent, nothing in it can be concealed. Every other gem is prized for hiding its interior behind fire or colour; this one is prized for showing it. Cutters orient the stone specifically so the needles read as lines — the whole art of the cut is deciding which line of sight to show.
The old lapidaries called the needles Venus hair, cheveux de Vénus, and the flèches d'amour — arrows of love. They were read as rays: light captured mid-flight. A crystal ball of clear quartz was the traditional instrument of seeing, and a rutilated sphere was the prized one, because it had rays already in it.
Rutile is titanium, the metal used today for the strongest, lightest structures we build. So the stone is exactly the two things a purview requires: perfect transparency, and needles of the toughest metal running through it. She sees clearly, and what she sees is held by something that does not bend.

- Kept for clarity of mind: quartz for the clean seeing, rutile for the line the seeing travels along.
- Worn for watchfulness and vigilance, the old office of the one who keeps the walls.

- Used as the seer's stone — the rutilated sphere was the preferred instrument of the old scryers.
