The stone read as the word

Apatite is ordinary in the best sense: it is the phosphate of bone, of teeth, of the fertiliser that feeds the world's grain. Yet cut clean it comes out an electric blue that rivals any rare stone. Common substance, uncommon light.

Its name comes from the Greek for deceit, because it mimics other gems. Colloquial speech does the same trick in reverse — it looks plain and carries mastery inside it, plain enough that anyone can enter.

What it is carried for

  • Carried when what she knows must be said so plainly that anyone may use it.
  • Held to keep mastery from turning into distance.
