The stone read as the word

Hematite is the calmest looking stone in the drawer and the heaviest in the hand. Its name comes from haima, blood — grind it and it streaks red no matter how silver the surface. Composure is not the absence of fire; it is fire with a polished face.

It is also the iron the earth kept. Whole ranges of hematite were laid down when the first oxygen entered the oceans. Steady things get built out of old events.

What it is carried for

  • Carried for weight and stillness in a loud room.
  • Held when she must be the coolest object present.
