Tiger's eye is a replacement: silica takes over an older fibrous mineral and keeps its alignment exactly. Every fibre points the same way, so the light they each reflect adds up into one bright band that follows your eye. Concerted effort looks like that — many small lines, one visible result.

Break the alignment and the eye disappears. The gem is not made of special material; it is made of ordinary material pointed the same direction.
