The stone read as the word
Selenite is the most workable gem there is. At hardness two you can shape it with a blade; the Egyptians and the Greeks carved window panes from it because it splits into sheets clear enough to see light through. Makeable is not a weakness — it is why anything gets made at all.
It also grows enormous. In the Cave of the Crystals in Naica, selenite beams reached eleven metres because the conditions held steady long enough. Given water, time and no interruption, a soft thing becomes the biggest crystal on record.
What it is carried for
