How the stone came to be
Sapphire is corundum, aluminium oxide grown under enormous heat and pressure, and it is one of the most orderly crystals on earth: a tight hexagonal lattice that repeats itself without deviation for millions of atoms. That is exactly why it is hard. Nine on the Mohs scale — the structure is the strength. It is a stone that is strong because it kept to its plan.
The blue comes from almost nothing: a trace of iron and titanium sitting in the lattice where aluminium should be. A fraction of a percent decides whether the same mineral is a ruby or a sapphire. Small things, placed at the beginning, determine the whole colour of the thing.
In the finest rough, microscopic needles run in three directions and throw back a six-rayed star — light organised by internal structure you cannot see from outside. A star sapphire is a blueprint made visible.
It has been the stone of governance and covenant for three thousand years: worn by kings and clergy, set in signet rings used to seal binding agreements, and named in Scripture as the pavement under the throne — a floor of sapphire, clear as the sky. The plan is the floor. Everything else is built standing on it.
