The Law of Patronage

Jewel of the day · Lapis Lazuli. C is who she is. E is how she works. O is what she holds and increases.

Spoken on this day

Day Twenty-Two is an OUT day, and patronage is the whole shape of it. Yesterday she read the signs and kept her point. Today she turns outward and meets somebody. Patronage is what a woman spends on another — her attention, her name, her custom, her backing.

The Adventure CEO becomes courteous. How she moves is to equal — she learns to meet a person level, to match what she was given, to answer courtesy with courtesy. And what she has to work with is others. That is the resource of this day. Not a market. Others.

The Architect becomes cordial — and cordial is the beginning of love, from cor, the heart. Warmth, not manners. And what she does now is more than equal: she enhances. Nothing passes through her hands and comes out the same size.

What she is, in the Architect place, is the other. She is the other side of the coin — the one who meets out, the one who answers. And this is the turn of the day: you are always somebody's other. In another woman's realm you are the others she has to work with. Understand that and nothing in the exchange is outside your control, because your half of it never was.

In the Sovereign she becomes congenial — of the same kind, the same genus, born agreeable. What she does is equalize: she does not only meet level, she levels. Where the ground is uneven she raises the low side, which is what a patron has always done for the one with the gift and no room.

And what she increases is outlay — what she lays out. Patronage costs. The old patrons were not always advanced or refined; the culture was rough in its own way, and out of that rough came the rough of the rough — the raw material that became the masterpiece because somebody paid for it. Courteous, then cordial, then congenial: and everything she lays out comes back enhanced. This matters tomorrow, on Day Twenty-Three.
