How the stone came to be
Aquamarine is beryl — the same mineral as emerald — colored pale blue by a trace of iron. Its name is Latin: aqua marina, water of the sea. It grows in hexagonal columns inside pegmatite cavities, sometimes in crystals large enough to be carried out on two shoulders, and unlike most gems it commonly forms clean, so a fine aquamarine can be almost as clear as the water it is named for.
It has always belonged to sailors. Romans carried it on voyages as protection over deep water; it was said to be treasure spilled from mermaids' chests, and to shine brightest under water. Fishermen and traders wore it not to become fearless but to stay calm — which on a ship is the same thing as staying alive.
That is why it carries the Law of Plenty. It is a stone of the ocean, and an ocean is not a pile of water — it is a supply that renews itself by tide. It gives away most of the world's oxygen and loses nothing.
