The stone read as the word

As the crystal grew, the chemistry of the fluid around it kept changing — so manganese pink formed first and iron green formed on the outside. The stone kept every phase instead of overwriting them. A colourful life is a record of changing conditions, all preserved.

Slice it the wrong way and you get one muddy colour. Cut across, and the whole story shows at once.
